The make-up room had the look of a hair-cutting salon with lights at all angles around half a dozen large mirrors. They were all incandescent lights, so you can imagine the fiery misery of those subjected to make-up. The make-up department was first headed by a Bengali who became too big for a studio and left. He was succeeded by a Maharashtrian who was assisted by a Dharwar Kannadiga, an Andhra, a Madras Indian Christian, an Anglo-Burmese and the usual local Tamils.

In those days I worked in a cubicle, two whole sides of which were French windows. (I didn’t know at that time they were called French windows.) Seeing me sitting at my desk tearing up newspapers day in and day out, most people thought I was doing next to nothing. It is likely that the Boss thought likewise too. So anyone who felt I should be given some occupation would barge into my cubicle and deliver an extended lecture. The ‘boy’ in the make-up department had decided I should be enlightened on how great literary talent was being allowed to go to waste in a department fit only for barbers and perverts. Soon I was praying for crowd-shooting all the time. Nothing short of it could save me from his epics.

Part 1 – The Makeup Department

Gemini Studios in Madras (Chennai) was one of the biggest film studios in India in the 1940s–50s. The make-up department used large amounts of Pancake, an American brand of make-up. The department was on the first floor, full of lights and mirrors. Actors, actresses, and even junior artists were covered with thick layers of pancake. Sometimes they looked odd rather than attractive.
One boy’s duty was to apply quick make-up on the crowd of junior artists. Ironically, he had once dreamt of becoming a star himself. The department had workers from different regions — Tamil, Telugu, Anglo-Burmese, and Bengali — who often quarreled, each claiming superiority.

1940–50 के दशक में मद्रास का जेमिनी स्टूडियो भारत के सबसे बड़े फ़िल्म स्टूडियो में से एक था। मेकअप विभाग में अमेरिकी ब्रांड पैनकेक बहुत बड़ी मात्रा में इस्तेमाल होता था। यह विभाग ऊपर की मंज़िल पर था और रोशनी व शीशों से भरा रहता था। कलाकारों और जूनियर कलाकारों पर मोटी परत में पैनकेक लगाया जाता था, जिससे वे आकर्षक की बजाय कई बार अजीब दिखने लगते थे।

Part 2 – Subbu and His Role

Next, the narrator describes Kothamangalam Subbu, who was a key figure in Gemini Studios. Subbu was extremely talented. He could write poems, stories, film dialogues, and screenplays. He was always cheerful and loyal to the boss. Because of this, he was trusted more than others.
If the producers faced any problem, Subbu could instantly come up with creative solutions. He could turn the most ordinary situation into an interesting scene. He also helped many struggling artists and gave them opportunities. However, some people thought that he rose so high only because of his loyalty to the boss.

Part 3 – The Legal Adviser and the Actress

The narrator then talks about the legal adviser of the studio. He was supposed to give legal advice, but he often created trouble. Once, an actress misunderstood his suggestion and left the studio permanently. This shows how sensitive film stars were and how dangerous such advisers could be.

Part 4 – The Boy Jealous of Subbu

In the story, there was also a boy in the story department. He remained silent most of the time. He seemed to dislike everyone, but in reality, he was jealous of Subbu’s success. He thought that Subbu’s closeness with the boss had destroyed his own career. Thus, he nurtured silent anger against Subbu.

Part 5 – The Englishman’s Visit
English:
One day, an Englishman visited Gemini Studios. His name was not clear to the staff. He gave a long speech that nobody understood properly. Later, the narrator came to know that he was a poet and critic. At that time, most people in the studio did not have enough knowledge to appreciate such a person.

Part 6 – The MRA (Moral Re-Armament) Group

Gemini Studios also hosted a visit by the Moral Re-Armament (MRA) group from abroad. They presented plays full of songs, dances, and moral lessons. Their influence was strong for some time. Many people in the studio felt inspired, but later their influence faded away.

Part 7 – The Magazine Incident and Final Realisation

Later, the narrator happened to read a book called The God That Failed. It was a collection of essays by six writers who had lost faith in communism. In that book, he found the name of the Englishman who had once visited Gemini Studios. Finally, the mystery was solved.
The chapter ends with a reflection: working in Gemini Studios gave the narrator many experiences and insights into people. These experiences later helped him in his writing career.
