कवि वॉल्ट व्हिटमैन कहते हैं कि उन्होंने धीरे-धीरे गिरने वाली बारिश से पूछा — “तुम कौन हो?”
बारिश उत्तर देती है कि वह पृथ्वी की कविता है। वह भूमि और अथाह समुद्र से भाप बनकर ऊपर उठती है और फिर रूप बदलकर बारिश के रूप में वापस आती है। इस प्रकार वह प्रकृति के चक्र को बनाए रखती है।
Extract 2 (English):
And forever, by day and night, I give back life to my own origin,
And make pure and beautify it;

कवि बताते हैं कि बारिश दिन और रात लगातार धरती को जीवन देती है। वह वातावरण को शुद्ध और सुन्दर बनाती है।
कविता की तरह बारिश भी अपने जन्म स्थान (धरती) पर लौटकर उसे पोषित करती है। वह चाहे ध्यान दिया जाए या नहीं, फिर भी प्रेमपूर्वक अपना कार्य करती रहती है।
